Today I was a typical tourist
I have been to Germany many times but I have never visited the most famous castle in all of Europe... Well maybe not the most famous in Europe but definitely the most famous in al of Bavaria.
Schloss Neuschwanstein is beautiful. But it has turned into a theme park. Maybe even worse, it has always been a theme park.
You have to pay for everything, so be prepared to have an empty wallet after visiting the castle. Luckily for me, my uncle wanted to spend the day and money on me. There is the parking, the guided tour (the only way to see the interior), the ride up to the castle, the water necessary to survive waiting in line for two hours.
Regardless, the castle was beautiful.
King Ludwig was crazy. Not really clinically crazy per say. He was declared insane by a doctor who had never seen him and three days later Ludwig and the doctor were found dead at the bottom of a lake. Ludwig was the last of his family line, thus bringing a new family into power. No one seems to want to say it so I will do the honors, murder.
Anyways, Schloss Neuschwanstein (AKA New Swan Castle, The Cinderella Castle) was King Ludwig's biggest achievement. He built it by the family's hunting lodge castle where he spent most of his childhood. The castle was never completed. He only lived in it for 172 days before he was murdered. And the main purpose was so he would feel like a king. Not even kidding, He built a throne room, which was never used as such, with the purpose of putting his ideology of the role of a king into architecture. He never even wanted anyone other than himself and his servants to be there. There was no room for company in the throne room, or the other throne room, or the reading room, or the writing room....
So we weren't allowed to take any photos in the castle. When asked why, no one could give me a real answer. Therefore, in twisted Dominique logic, their rules are not real. So I took a fewsnaps anyways, mainly so I could show my Grandma who stayed at home. What's the worst that can happen? I don't think as a photojournalist with unpopular opinions and a loud mouth, that I will survive a career without getting someone mad at me.
Anyway, I can now cross Neuschwanstein off my to-do list. I probably won't be heading back anytime soon. There are thousands of beautiful things in Germany, and thousands of beautiful castles in Europe, why do what all the tourist are doing?
